Prairie State Energy Campus

Located in Washington County, Illinois the Prairie State Energy Campus is a technologically advanced electric generation facility utilizing domestic Illinois coal resources from its adjacent underground mine to power its 1,600 megawatt power plant. Since 2012, Prairie State has been producing baseload electricity on behalf of its not-for-profit public power owners to more than 2.5 million families across the Midwest.

NIMPA owns a 7.6% undivided interest, representing approximately 120 MW of the plant.

Prairie State fulfills NIMPA’s vision of utilizing domestic energy resources to provide low-cost, reliable and environmentally responsible power to their customers. To ensure stable, long-term fuel for the power plant, NIMPA and its partners at Prairie State have already purchased coal reserves to power the plant for approximately 30 years. The plant design incorporates state-of-the-art emissions control technology that significantly reduces the top four monitored air pollutants:

  • Nitrogen Oxide (NOX): 85% removal
  • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2): 98% removal
  • Particulate Matter (PM): 99% removal
  • Mercury (Hg): 90% removal

Prairie State ranks among the most efficient coal-fired power plants in the country. Highly efficient units such as Prairie State consume less coal to produce more energy per ton of coal, thus reducing CO2 emissions.
